Local Photographer’s Work Goes to International Exhibition

Two Prints created by Maggie Messer of Maggie Messer Photography in Leander, Texas has recently been accepted into the GENERAL Collection and LOAN Collection of the 2009 International Print Competition. Messer's work will be on display at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, January 10-12, 2009, in Nashville, Tenn. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention of professional photographers and several photographic associations.

A panel of over 40 eminent jurors from across the United States selected the top images from more than 4,300 total submitted entries at Gwinnett Technical College in Georgia. Judged against a standard of excellence, almost 1,700 images were selected for the General Collection and just over 500 (12 percent) were selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best. The Loan Collection images will be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book, and nearly 200 selected General Collection images will be published in the “Showcase” book by Marathon Press.

Titled " A Hidden Moment"(General Collection) and “The Bout”(Loan Collection) Messer's entries will be in Nashville alongside other photographic works from not only PPA’s print competition, but also traveling and special invitational displays. These images constitute the world’s largest annual exhibit of professional photography gathered simultaneously under one roof.

Professional Photographers of America (PPA), an international non-profit association, exists to assist its 22,000 members in achieving their professional, artistic and fraternal goals; to promote public awareness of the profession; and to advance the making of images in all of its disciplines as an art, a science and a visual recorder of history.

Julia's Garden

In February, I had the honor of speaking to a class at Julia's Garden about photography. I had so much fun and the kids were such a blast to be with!

There were about 5 kiddos from the age of 3 -7. I brought in some "old" cameras for them to touch and feel and learn the different parts of a camera. We had a fun portrait session too!

I sent them each home with a black and white filmed camera to explore with and be creative. I look forward to one day seeing what these little artists created with their cameras.

Check out Julia's Garden, it is a fun learning environment, based on the principles and methods as defined by Dr. Maria Montessori. Created with the intentions of giving parents helpful tools to aid in their child’s development at the appropriate stages. I know your kids would absoultely LOVE Katherine, and the school!

Toys for Tots - Update

I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday with your families and took some time to slow down for a bit and relax!

I wanted to give you an update on what I heard about the Toys for Tots drive. Our efforts help contribute to collection over 13,000 toys!

One reason I choose the Toys for Tots drive, was that all of the toys stayed locally in Central Texas! Imagine ALL the children that got to open up a toy for Christmas! It really warms the heart to know we all helped be a part of it!

I think it goes to show, even in a tough economy, when so many people had to tighten their budgets, it truly is BETTER TO GIVE, THEN RECEIVE!
